This isn't about being a cynic. It’s about being a skeptic.

The Scroll Machine
When I was a kid, boredom was just a thing that happened to you. You sat there. You stared at the ceiling. Maybe you went outside and found something to do, or maybe you didn’t. Either way, you lived through it. Nobody handed you a slot machine to fix the problem.
That is basically what short-form video is. A slot machine that fits in your pocket and never runs out of quarters. And the research is starting to catch up to what most of us already feel in our bones.
The Numbers Don’t Lie
TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts are not small operations. TikTok alone pulled in $23.6 billion in global ad revenue in 2024. Instagram is on track to generate over $32 billion in US ad revenue in 2025 alone, driven in large part by Reels. YouTube Shorts reports more than 70 billion daily views.123
That is an extraordinary amount of money being made from getting you to stare at your phone for another 15 seconds. Over and over. All day. These platforms are not in the content business. They are in the attention business. Your attention is the product, and the short-form video format is just the most efficient delivery mechanism they have ever built.
What It Is Actually Doing to Your Brain
A large meta-analysis published in Psychological Bulletin in late 2025 looked at the data across tens of thousands of participants and found that higher short-form video use is linked to measurable deficits in attention, inhibitory control, and working memory, alongside increased anxiety, stress, and depression.4 The effect size for attention was not trivial. It was the kind of number that raises eyebrows in a research context.
The mechanism is not mysterious. Every time a new video loads, your brain gets a small dopamine hit. Novelty, reward, repeat. The platforms design their autoplay features specifically to eliminate any natural stopping point, which keeps the dopamine anticipation cycle running without interruption.5 Over time, your brain recalibrates around this. Tasks that don’t deliver instant payoffs start feeling harder and slower. The focused effort that reading, learning, or problem-solving requires becomes genuinely more difficult, because your brain is now tuned for a faster rhythm.6
Researchers have started calling this “reward-seeking.” It is not a character flaw. It is conditioning. You were trained, gradually and deliberately, to need the next hit before the last one even finished.
The App Is Working as Intended
Here is the part the platforms would prefer you not think about too much. The addictive behavior is not a bug. The attention fragmentation is not an unintended side effect. The entire system is engineered to produce exactly this outcome, because the more you scroll, the more ads you see, and the more money changes hands.7
A study from researchers at USC found that habitual sharing of short-form content is largely automatic. The behavior bypasses active decision-making and gets routed through the same mental shortcuts as any other habit. You are not choosing to keep scrolling any more than you choose to scratch an itch.8
And the business model depends on you not noticing the difference.
A Note on Who This Is Actually Hurting
The research is clear that younger users are disproportionately affected. Generation Z has grown up with these platforms during the developmental years when sustained attention, impulse control, and emotional regulation are still being built. About 95% of US adolescents report daily social media use, with 35% describing themselves as almost constantly online.9
That is worth sitting with for a second. These are kids whose brains are literally still forming, and they are spending a significant portion of their waking hours in a dopamine loop engineered by some of the most sophisticated behavioral scientists in the world. Nobody asked them if that was okay.
To be fair, the research does note some nuance here. A small number of studies suggest that actively creating and posting short-form content, as opposed to passively consuming it, can have neutral or even modestly positive effects on social connection, particularly for isolated older adults.10 Watching a firehose of content is not the same as picking up a camera and making something. But let’s be honest about what most of us are actually doing with these apps.
The Grift Behind the Grift
TikTok’s own internal research, which leaked in 2021, reportedly showed that the company understood the addictive loop it had built. The platforms routinely argue that their products are neutral tools and that responsible use is the user’s job. That framing conveniently ignores the fact that the entire product is designed to make responsible use as difficult as possible.
You were handed a slot machine, told to use it wisely, and blamed when you couldn’t put it down.
The next time a reel autoplays and you find yourself 40 minutes deeper than you meant to be, that is not a willpower problem. It is an engineering problem. The difference matters, because one of those has a solution that doesn’t involve you feeling bad about yourself.
Put the phone down. Stare at the ceiling for a minute. The boredom won’t kill you. It might actually be good for you.
