This isn't about being a cynic. It’s about being a skeptic.

Mountain Tar and Marketing
If you spend any time on wellness social media, you have probably seen someone holding a jar of what looks like motor oil, telling you it cured their brain fog, fixed their testosterone, and gave them the energy of a golden retriever on a sugar high. That would be shilajit. And honestly, it is a more interesting story than most supplement hype, because the science is actually real in places.
So What Even Is This Stuff?
Shilajit is not something that was invented in a lab in 2023. It is a tarry, mineral-rich resin that oozes out of rocks in the Himalayas and other mountain ranges, formed over centuries by the slow decomposition of plant material by microorganisms. People in Nepal and northern India have been using it in Ayurvedic medicine for generations. It is not a fad. It is old.
The active ingredient researchers care most about is fulvic acid, which makes up the majority of purified shilajit’s bioactive content. Fulvic acid is a naturally occurring compound with documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It also appears to help transport nutrients into cells, which is why shilajit has attracted legitimate scientific attention over the last couple of decades.
What the Research Actually Shows
Here is where things get nuanced, which is exactly where the influencers tend to bail.
The most talked-about claim is testosterone. There is actually a real randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial behind this one. A 2016 study published in Andrologia gave men between 45 and 55 years old 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day for 90 days and found statistically significant increases in total testosterone, free testosterone, and DHEAS compared to placebo.1 A more recent 2024 trial using a different standardized extract found similar results, along with self-reported improvements in vitality.2
Those are real findings. They are also small studies using specific, standardized, purified extracts. They are not license to go buy whatever tar-looking thing shows up first on Amazon and expect the same result.
The muscle and recovery angle also has some backing. A 2019 study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that 500 mg per day of purified shilajit helped participants retain muscular strength after fatigue, and reduced markers of collagen breakdown. Only the high-dose group showed significant results compared to placebo — the low-dose group was statistically indistinguishable from the control.3
There is also early research suggesting fulvic acid may block the aggregation of tau proteins, which is relevant to Alzheimer’s research. Some bone density data looks promising for postmenopausal women. A 2022 clinical trial found shilajit extract helped preserve bone mineral density over 48 weeks in women with osteopenia.4
None of this is the cure-all the internet sells it as. All of it is worth paying attention to.
Where the Marketing Goes Off the Rails
The gap between “some promising early clinical studies” and “ancient Himalayan superfood that will fix everything wrong with you” is where the grift lives.
The shilajit market was worth about $192 million in 2024 and is expected to nearly triple by 2035, driven largely by influencer marketing and social media.5 That growth depends on keeping the claims as wide as possible and the questions as few as possible.
Here is the part nobody on Instagram mentions: the product quality problem is significant. In 2024, ConsumerLab independently tested eight popular shilajit supplements and found that the amount of fulvic acid per serving varied by nearly 32,000% across products, ranging from just 6.9 mg to over 2,200 mg.6 The clinical studies that produced the testosterone and muscle recovery results used specific, standardized extracts standardized to at least 50% fulvic acid by weight. Most of what is being sold online does not tell you what you are actually getting.
The heavy metal concern is also real, though more manageable than the alarmist content would suggest. Shilajit naturally forms in rock, and can contain heavy metals like lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury as part of its geological origin.7 A comprehensive review found that most tested products fall within WHO and FDA permissible limits, but some exceed those limits, and the variance between products is wide. The ConsumerLab testing found heavy metal contamination was not a serious issue in the products they tested, though some would exceed strict lead limits if taken more than once per day. The word “third-party tested” on the label is not a decoration. It matters here.
The Honest Bottom Line
Shilajit is not snake oil. It is a substance with a real history and some legitimate research behind it. The testosterone and muscle recovery findings are small but real, and the research on cognitive health and bone density is genuinely interesting. If you are curious about it, that curiosity is not unreasonable.
What is unreasonable is buying an unverified powder off the internet because a guy with 300,000 followers told you it would transform your life. The clinical studies that show actual results used purified, standardized extracts from verified sources. That is not what most of the $20 bags on Amazon are. Look for third-party verification of fulvic acid content. Look for a certificate of analysis. Look for something that tells you what you are actually buying.
The substance has been around for centuries. It will still be there after you take five minutes to make sure the product you are holding is what it says it is.
